KUCHING: Chitose Group has paved the way for a new business model by setting up a consortium called Matsuri (Microalgae Towards a Sustainable and Resilient Industry) in Japan.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this was the world’s first joint project to develop a society based on just algae.
He said the consortium had enlisted more than 50 companies and some public organisations, including Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC), to be in the partnership.
“I believe with this new business collaboration framework, the algae industry has a good potential to be viable in the long term.
“Sarawak’s sustainability achievement in this unique collaboration between the public and private sector will demonstrate to others what we are willing to do for this planet and for the betterment of ourselves.”
Abang Johari said this during the official launch of Chitose Carbon Capture Central Sarawak at Sejingkat Power Corporation here on Wednesday (May 10).
He encouraged the private sector and multinationals from abroad to take the opportunity to develop similar partnerships and initiative in circular economy-based projects in Sarawak.
“The state government will continue to support this algae project as much as possible with the aim of promoting and achieving our Green Agenda in line with our aspirations and goals for 2030.
“As we continue to move forward, we need to align ourselves and collectively commit our efforts so that Sarawak will achieve a thriving society driven by data and innovation where everyone enjoys economic prosperity, social inclusivity, and a sustainable environment,” he added.
