SIBU: More than 50 primary school pupils participated in the inaugural ‘722 Sarawak Merdeka’ children colouring contest hosted by the Sarawak Liberation Movement (SLM) at Daesco Orang Zone Star Mega Mall here yesterday.

According to the organising committee chairman Simon Tiong, the contest which received encouraging response was divided into two groups, namely, primary one to three, and primary four to six.

He said the top three winners and three consolation prizes of each group would receive prizes including children study table sets and stationery.

Among the contest’s objectives, he pointed out, was to ignite the creative side of the children’s mind and to help develop their fine skills and also encourage their interest in drawing.

“Studies have also shown that the practice of creating art helps in the overall development of children in all areas.

“Besides, it is also to let the children, our next generation and parents to know the very important part of Sarawak history which was formed on July 22, 1963.  Through this colouring contest, hopefully they will have the feel and know a bit of Sarawak history,” Tiong added.
