KUCHING: Around 607 folk dancers participated in the annual Kuching Festival Folk Dance Display in conjunct ion wi t h the Kuching Festival held at the Kuching Hockey Stadium on Sunday evening here. 35 teams in total from local and international took part.
The local teams were from Kuching, Sibu, Lawas, Bintulu whereas international teams were from Sabah, Penang, Johor, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Present to officiate at the event was Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Women chief Kho Teck Wan, who is also the event Organising Chairperson. Kho in her speech said that folk dance must be preserved as it was developed by the people to reflect on the life and culture of a country.
“It is hoped that the elder dancers would recruit more youngsters so that they could learn about folk dance and then it could continue to pass down to the future generations,” she said.
Folk dancing is also a platform for people to learn about each other’s culture, and a relationship among each other is further fostered regardless of race and religion, Kho pointed out. Al so pres ent was Deput y Organising Chairperson Councillor Iu Cho Heng.
