KUCHING: A total of 750 police officers and personnel from various departments and branches in Sarawak contingent police headquarters (IPK), will be deployed to enforce the 10-day ‘Op Selamat’ in conjunction with the Chinese New Year 2023.

The state-wide operation commencing from Wednesday (Jan 18) until Jan 27, aims at reducing the accident rate throughout Sarawak, enforce traffic laws and regulations, creating a sense of comfort and safety among road users, and to prevent house trespassing.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri in a statement, said 56 accident-prone hotspots throughout the state have been identified.

Police officers and members will be assigned to the hotspots to increase patrols and ensure the accident rate is reduced.

“The operation will focus on federal roads, state roads and town roads especially in areas where accidents and traffic jams often occur, as well as residential areas and neighbourhoods.

“In addition, the police will also focus on preventing trespassing on houses left unoccupied by the tenants. Policemen will make periodic patrols to ensure that the premises and houses are safe of any criminal activities,” he said.

Azman advised all road users to always obey traffic rules and instructions from on-duty enforcement officers throughout the festive season.

He stressed that strict actions will be taken against any road user found to be violating and not complying with the traffic rules.

“Always prioritise personal safety and family safety and remember your loved ones,” he said.

The public are also reminded to provide co-operation and inform the police when leaving their homes during the festive season.
