Over RM4 million worth of contrabands seized

SIBU: The General Operations Force (GOF) seized illicit cigarettes worth over RM4 million in an operation dubbed ‘Ops Kontraban’ here last Thursday.

GOF Sarawak brigade commander SAC Mancha Ata revealed that the GOF 10th Battalion Intelligence Unit carried out the raid on a premises at Jalan Hulu Lanang around 11.45am.

“The team inspected the premises and found a total of 530 cartons of duty-not-paid cigarettes.

“In the raid, seven men – four locals and three Indonesians, aged between 17 and 35, were arrested to facilitate investigations,” he said.

Apart from that, two lorries and a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) were also seized. The total value of seizures from the raid was RM4,231,200.

The suspects and seized items were handed over to Sibu police for investigations under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.

Mancha explained that from Jan 1 to Mar 11, GOF Sarawak has successfully seized contrabands worth RM9,200,970 in 12 raids conducted under ‘Ops Kontraban/Ops Libas’, involving a total of 19 arrests – 14 locals and five Indonesians.
