KABONG: The discussions on MASwings takeover by Sarawak government expected to conclude by year-end.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said it is important to establish a state-owned airline to enhance connectivity and tourism, especially to areas like Kabong.
“When we aim to attract visitors to Kabong and Sarawak, the necessity of an airplane becomes evident. We cannot swim from Singapore here; flying is a must,” he said during the Kabong International Kite Festival 2024 closing ceremony held at Dewan Terbuka Pantai Tanjung Kembang today (Mar 10).
Abang Johari also said that the strategic acquisition of MASwings would play a crucial role in mitigating the surge in flight fares during peak travel seasons.
“With celebrations such as Chinese New Year and the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri, flight fares inevitably rise,” he observed, adding that current efforts to subsidise flight tickets for Sarawakian students in Peninsula Malaysia enable them to return home for festive occasions more affordably.
