KUALA LUMPUR: The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) participated in the Green Cities Investment Forum in Kuala Lumpur, and MPP chairman Cr Tan Kai was invited as a speaker for Plenary Session 1 on the preparation and implementation of Green City Action Plans (GCAPs) in Malaysia.
As the first local government in Sarawak to initiate the development and implementation of a GCAP, he presented the key findings of the Padawan GCAP and highlighted the council’s sustainability initiatives.
“These initiatives are aimed at reducing carbon footprints and mitigating the effects of climate change within the jurisdiction of MPP,” MPP said through a press statement on Tuesday (Nov 26).
“Padawan GCAP is aligned with Sarawak’s Post Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 and Malaysia’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), showcasing MPP’s commitment to supporting both state and national policies on environmental sustainability.
“We are grateful for the support from the Sarawak and Federal Governments in implementing Padawan GCAP. Padawan Municipal Council is committed to making Padawan, Sarawak, and Malaysia a greener place,” said Tan Kai.
During his presentation, he also addressed significant challenges faced by MPP, particularly the need for financial support for climate action and resilience projects.
He called for substantial investment from the Sarawak and Federal Governments as well as private investors to ensure the success of the Climate Action Plan.
Additionally, he stressed that public and stakeholder awareness and participation are crucial for the success of Padawan GCAP.
