KUCHING: The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) Cleanliness Month is a significant step towards becoming a greener city and a sign that people are more conscious of health and cleanliness.

MPP chairman Tan Kai said with the support of the Sarawak government, various programmes have been carried out by the council to ensure the cleanliness in Padawan area.

“Throughout July 2024, we have a total of eight activities: Joint Solid Waste Segregation Programme (MPP-Trienekens), Recycled Materials Sculpture Competition for Primary and Secondary School, No Plastic Bag Days and No to Styrofoam Food Containers, Buy Back Campaign for Recycled Items, Electrical/ Electronic Waste, Collection of Used Cooking Oil and Donation of Used Clothing, Environmental Sustainability Programme at Kampung Beradek, Health, Environment, and Food Premises Cleanliness Education Programme, Logo Design Competition for Bulan Kebersihan Bandaraya Kuching Peringkat MPP, and Mass Vaccination, Dog Licensing, and Microchipping.

“Some of the activities will be stretched out to the end of the year and these programmes are made possible through the collaboration with various agencies, institutions and non-governmental organisation (NGOs).”

He said this in his speech during the launch of MPP’s Cleanliness Month at Batu Kawa Riverbank Park here on Monday (July 1), representing Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

He hoped that the activities could teach the future generations the importance of keeping the land clean and the community to be alert to their surroundings.

“Moreover, the importance of public engagement and education cannot be overstated. By involving community members, especially the youth, we instil values of environmental stewardship and responsibility.

“It is through education and active participation that we can ensure a sustainable and cleaner future for our children and grandchildren.”

He urged residents around Padawan and Kuching to incorporate green values in their home surroundings in line with Sarawak’s aspiration of a “cleaner, greener, safer and healthier Sarawak”.

“This aspiration is also in line with MPP’s focus and vision to make all areas under its administration clean, beautiful, and comfortable to live in, work, and attract tourism and investment.
