SIBURAN: Nestled within the Sarawak Delta Geopark, the Padawan sub district is emerging as a prime destination for geological enthusiasts and adventure seekers.
According to head of the Social Transformation Section and representative of the Resident of Kuching Division Joseph Liaw, Padawan boasts a plethora of unique geological sites that offer visitors a chance to delve into the fascinating world of landscape formation.
He emphasised the manifold benefits that the tourism industry brings to the area.
Renowned for its pristine natural beauty and adventure-rich environment, Padawan is increasingly attracting tourists from far and wide.
Liaw said this not only boosts the local tourism sector but also provides a significant economic uplift for small and local businesses.
“This will boost the tourism industry here and help small and local businesses generate more income,” he said during the closing ceremony of the Borneo Ultra Blue Trail Run Padawan 2024 at the Annah Biya Association Hall last Saturday.
Indeed Padawan’s appeal extends beyond its geological wonders.
Liew noted the district is quickly becoming a hotspot for extreme sports.
He said the recent motorcross and water sports events, such as rafting, have drawn considerable attention.
Such activities are significant in positioning Padawan as a premier destination for thrill-seekers.
“These efforts will help accelerate the Sarawak Delta Geopark’s recognition by UNESCO as a Global Geopark by 2026,” he added.
As such, he commended the successful organisation of the Borneo Ultra Blue Trail, part of the Sarawak Delta Geopark Trail Run Series 2/2024, saying it serves as a testament to Padawan’s growing reputation.
This event has not only spotlighted the district’s potential for extreme sports but also provided a lucrative platform for local entrepreneurs.
Vendors have thrived, selling agricultural products and handicrafts, thereby boosting their incomes.
Additionally, he also highlighted the importance of preserving and promoting traditional sports, which play a crucial role in maintaining cultural heritage.
