KUCHING: People at large appear to be still of two minds when it comes to registering under the government’s Central Database System (PADU).

One of the primary concerns among the people is regarding data security.

A collaboration between the Ministry of Economy, the Department of Statistics (DOSM), and the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU), led to the development of PADU which seeks to get data on Malaysian household income.

Recently, the Statistics Department raised concerns about difficulties in getting Malaysians to register, especially those in the M40 and T20 household categories.

Here, New Sarawak Tribune asked five individuals if they have or have yet to register under PADU.

Anneeza Binti Suhaimi, 42, Civil Servant

My husband and I have registered for PADU, as it is required of all civil servants to register. We hope that PADU will be beneficial to my family, and we also hope that our private data will always be protected.

I have not registered, and I am unsure if I will do so because I am aware of agencies like the National Registration Department (JPN) or Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (LHDN), which already have our personal details in their databases.

Juliana Nicholas, 38, Stakeholder Executive

No. I did not register for PADU because my main concern is over possible data and security breaches. However, when the whole system is more stable, and when I see any subsidies and help for those in need are being channeled accordingly, I will consider registering.

Susilawati Hamdan, 45 Assistant Administrative Officer

I have already registered, as a civil servant I am required to register. From what I understand, PADU collects our personal information so the federal government can identify if we are eligible for financial aid or subsidies.

Noorazian Mahdan, 36, Housewife

I have already registered because the federal government recommended it. In my opinion, the reason why people have not registered is because, at the time it was introduced, people were unsure what PADU is for.

People started getting more worried when allegations arose on social media platforms saying that money in personal bank accounts has been disappearing after registering for PADU.
