NEW DELHI: Pakistan has strongly condemned the Israeli attack on the Iranian embassy in Syria’s capital Damascus on Monday, calling it a major escalation in an already volatile region.
“The attack is an unacceptable violation of the sovereignty of Syria and undermines its stability and security. It is a violation of international law and the UN Charter,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
“This irresponsible act of the Israeli forces is a major escalation in an already volatile region. We call on the UN Security Council to prevent Israel from its adventurism in the region and its illegal acts attacking its neighbours and targeting foreign diplomatic facilities,” it said.
Israeli warplanes bombed the consular section next to the main embassy building.
The attack killed seven military advisers.
They included brigadier generals Mohammad Reza Zahedi and Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi, Iranian news agency IRNA reported, citing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The Iranian ambassador to Syria, Hossein Akbari, said Israeli F-35 warplanes from the occupied Golan targeted the building with six missiles.
Akbari said he was at his office in the embassy when the attack took place.
Iran has vowed to retaliate against the Israeli aggression.
“Iran, while reserving the right to retaliate, will decide on its own how to respond and punish the aggressor,” Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani said. – BERNAMA
