KUCHING: Para athletes must continue to receive guidance and support, as they, like regular athletes, hold significant value for the country.
In stating this, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said it is the responsibility of everyone to offer their support to this special group, as they are valuable assets to the nation.
“As such, the Sarawak government through the Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Ministry is committed to supporting the athletes with disabilities.
“The Ministry is dedicated to helping them to develop their talents and ensure a bright future,” he said.
Awang Tengah, who represented Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this during the 21st Para Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2024 banquet held at Hikmah Exchange Event Centre last night (Sept 22).
He then said through the Games, it is expected to produce more champions for Malaysia, both at the national and global levels.
The Games, he said, would not only showcase the para athletes’ abilities but also help prepare them for international competition through determination and dedication.
“This can be achieved where para athletes not only represent our country but to compete globally with a strong spirit of perseverance.
“For example, we celebrated together when national powerlifting star Bonnie Bunyau Gustin set a world record in weightlifting and secured gold for the country during the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris.
“In addition, other para athletes also brought home gold, silver and bronze medals, showing that our athletes have the talent and ability to compete at the highest levels,” he said.
He added with Bonnie’s accomplishment, the unity and pride can be felt by all Malaysians.
“We all stood together, regardless of background, when our national anthem was sung and the Malaysian flag was flown.
“Everyone felt proud, and this is the spirit born from these games – not just among regular athletes but also the special athletes. We are proud of them all,” he said.
He then said through the Para SUKMA, it is not only about producing champions but also fostering unity, pride, and a love for the country.
“The Games serve as a platform to strengthen cooperation and unity within society, contributing to the stability of the state and nation,” said Awang Tengah.
Among those present were Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, Minister of Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, and Para SUKMA Sarawak Chef De Mission Datuk Muhammad Razi Sitam.
