KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia Para Games (Para Sukma) 2020 in Johor scheduled to be held in August has been postponed to a later date, due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
Malaysian Paralympic Council (MPC) president Datuk Seri Megat D Shahriman Zaharudin said the new dates would be set as soon as the ones for the 2020 Sukma Games were rescheduled.
“As it is a universal issue and can threaten the safety and well-being of para-athletes who need more attention, especially in terms of health, it is best for the 2020 Johor Para Sukma to be postponed.
“All the latest developments will be discussed again with the National Sports Council (MSN) and the State Youth and Sports Department,” he said in a statement yesterday.
The decision to postpone the biennial event was reached at a special meeting of the Para Sukma Supreme Committee held online yesterday.
The half-hour meeting attended by various stakeholders was chaired by Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) secretary-general Datuk Dr Waitchalla RRV Suppiah this morning to discuss the situation of the Johor Para Sukma following the threat posed by the Covid-19 outbreak.
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican had previously announced that Sukma 2020, scheduled to be held in July, would be postponed to a later date due to Covid-19. – Bernama
