KOTA SAMARAHAN: Excitement is building as Sarawak prepares to host the Malaysia Games (SUKMA).
Not only are local athletes eager to compete on home turf, but the wider community is also enthusiastic about the opening event.
While Kuching will be the main hub for most sports, the action will spread across the state, with Sibu hosting football, volleyball, and badminton; Bintulu, takraw, and muay thai; Miri, rugby, softball, sailing, karate, martial arts, and fencing; Bentong, weightlifting; Mukah, netball, and judo; Sri Aman, boxing; Serian, gymnastics; and Kota Samarahan, chess, and futsal.
The Sarawak Tribune spoke to several people about the SUKMA buzz.
MOHD RAHATHIR HASSAN, 43

By hosting SUKMA in nine districts, Sarawak has a fantastic opportunity to showcase local products, from food to handicrafts. This could be a real boost for the economy.
MASRI SELIHI, 44

We’re thrilled to be involved, even though the training has been gruelling since June. The trust placed in us by the Sarawak Arts Council is a huge honour. We’re determined to deliver a top-notch performance for Malaysians, especially the people of Sarawak.
EVANDER HOLYFIELO DANES, 25

Sarawakians are incredibly proud to be hosting SUKMA. They’re looking forward to cheering on local athletes and experiencing the electric atmosphere. It’s also a chance to showcase our state’s culture and beauty to visitors.
SHARIFAH ZUHAIZA WAN HAMDEN, 45,

I can’t wait to see Sarawak’s athletes in action. I’m taking time off work to attend as many events as possible. It’s even more special because this is my son’s first time competing in BMX. We’re incredibly proud of him and believe he can make Sarawak proud.
NURLYANA ABDULLAH, 54,

Every year, we look forward to SUKMA, but this year’s excitement is off the charts because it’s happening in Sarawak. The opening ceremony will be a spectacular showcase of our state’s talent and culture.
