KUCHING: Parents should not stop their children aged below 18 from taking the Covid-19 vaccination which will protect them against the virus.

Demak Laut assemblyman Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin’s announcement on teenage vaccination should be taken as an opportunity by parents and guardians to let their children inoculated.

“This is important to ensure the safety of the children,” he said on Tuesday (Sept 7).

Apart from being protected from Covid-19, he said the school sessions could resume safely after the children were vaccinated.

“Parents play an important role by allowing their children to get the Covid-19 vaccine,” he said, adding that it was high time for the teenagers to be vaccinated as Sarawak had already achieved 80 percent herd immunity after vaccinating the adult population.

In another development, Dr Hazland said the Demak Laut Constituency Service Centre had handed over food aid to the residents of Kampung Tanjung Bako which was placed under the enhanced movement control order (EMCO) for two weeks which started on Monday.

He said 340 heads of household comprising 2,000 residents would be receiving food assistance to lessen their burden.

“Thank you to those involved, especially the government agencies and non-government organisations (NGOs) in helping to distribute the food aid,” he said.
