SIBU: A Pasar Tamu and a bin centre will be built for the people staying next to Lanang Bridge in Sungai Assan here. The centre is expected to be ready by early next year.

Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) deputy chairman Robert Lau Hui Yew said that the bin centre was necessary so that motorists have a proper place to discard their rubbish.

“We have received many complaints from the people that this place is always filled with rubbish. We also found out that most of the motorists who use this road are from Kuching and Sarikei,” he pointed out at a mass cleaning campaign here yesterday.

Lau stressed that with the bin centre, it would help keep the place clean and tidy as outsiders would have a place to throw their rubbish.

“The bin centre together with the Pasar Tamu will be built this month,” he said, adding that both projects would be ready for use by January next year.

On the rationale for the Pasar Tamu, he explained that it would house the many individual native traders along the stretch of road leading to the bridge.

“There are many individual stalls but they don’t have a proper system to operate their businesses,” he said.

Lau also gave some advice to parents with school-going children.

“There is a Chinese saying ‘If you plant a tree, in 10 years you will be able to see it bear fruits. But you will need 100 years for human being. This is because it is more difficult and more time is needed to nurture children to become a better person,” he said, urging parents to keep tab on their children’s education.

He explained that children need to read to widen their knowledge. “I can promise to give free books to them to read as only with education, can they grow up to become successful individuals.”
