KUALA LUMPUR: It started as a hobby but soon his passion for plants and flowers began to develop after he took an agricultural science course in secondary school.

It was in 2011 when Amirullah Khalid, 35, decided to start his floral business in Sungai Buloh after two and a half years working as a customer service representative at an airline company.

One of the attractions in his floral shop is succulent plants or succulents, a group of plants which store water in leaves, as they are thick, fleshy, flourish in dry condition and cannot survive in high humidity.

“When I decided to resign and start this business, a lot of the people around me questioned my decision because this industry is synonymous with women.

“However, it did not stop me from pursuing the thing I love although some of them said I would barely survive in this industry,” he told Bernama here.

Although succulents are becoming more popular in Malaysia, Amirullah said many people are still unaware of these wonderful plants.

Apart from succulents, terrarium, a mini-garden in a glass jar, is also becoming a trend for Malaysians to collect and take care of the plants as a hobby, as well as a way to generate more income.

“These plants have quite the same characteristics with cactus, but succulents and terrariums do not have thorns and cannot be exposed to direct sunlight,” he added.

He hopes to build his own garden nursery in Sungai Buloh by next year for the public to have a first-hand experience of various types of plants and flowers. – Bernama
