DEBAK: Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri stressed that the Senior Citizens Activity Centre (PAWE) is open to all senior citizens, irrespective of their status or background.

She stated that this inclusivity is one of the objectives of the establishment, which is currently under review to ensure alignment with present circumstances.

“In addition, PAWE caters to senior citizens of all abilities, providing a space for them to come together and engage in various activities.”

She told the media this following the PAWE Debak inauguration ceremony and Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri programme at Dewan Millenia today.

Nancy clarified that her ministry allows the establishment of PAWE without restrictions within a parliamentary constituency, albeit at a considerable distance from each other.

“Proximity could lead to unhealthy competition among centres. Hence, PAWEs within a constituency should be at least 25km apart.”

Moreover, each PAWE is allocated funds for establishment not exceeding RM100,000. Beyond this initial amount, centres are required to actively organise activities, submit activity reports, and apply for additional funding, capped at RM50,000.

“We encourage PAWEs to host a variety of activities, including health and economic initiatives. Many are engaged in economic endeavours such as selling frozen food. The choice of activities largely depends on the needs and preferences of the local community.”

Nancy also announced plans to enhance the qualifications of caregivers, particularly by promoting higher education and diploma attainment.

“This initiative aims to improve the quality of caregiving services, making it easier for families to find qualified caregivers, especially for children and the elderly.
