PBB, which was founded on April 30, 1973, is now one of the largest parties in the state.
It came to being following a merger between three political parties in Sarawak at that time, namely Parti Negara Sarawak (PANAS), Barisan Rakyat Jati Sarawak (BARJASA), and Parti Pesaka Anak Sarawak (PESAKA).
The late Tun Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Temenggong Jugah Barieng who was the Minister of Sarawak Internal Affairs in the federal government served as the first PBB president until 1975.
The deputy president then was (Tun Pehin Sri) Abdul Taib Mahmud.
In 1977, the party elected Taib as the second PBB president and he served till 1978.
The party saw Tun Abdul Rahman Ya’kub holding the post from 1978 until 1981 with Taib and Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang as deputies.
Taib was elected once again as the fourth party president from 1981 until 2014 with Jabu serving as deputy president (1979-2017) along with Tan Sri Datuk Sri Abang Abu Bakar Abang Mustapha (1990 to 1998).
The late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, took over as the fifth president from 2014 to 2017.
At that time, the deputies were Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
After Adenan passed away in 2017, Abang Johari was elected as the sixth president, with Uggah and Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan as his deputies.
