KUCHING: Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru (PBDSB) reiterated its opposition against the implementation of Hudud in this country and the tabling of RUU 355, the legal form of Hudud before the current Session of parliament.
The party maintained that any law on Hudud under whatever guise and form is against the spirit and intent of Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), and against the Federal Constitution which provided for freedom of diverse religions in this multi-racial and multi religious Malaysia.
RUU355 which was first moved by Hadi Awang, the president of Parti Islam Malaysia(PAS), and now after receiving the blessing of UMNO and other BN components, notably SPDP from Sarawak, will be debated and might be voted into law by Parliament in its current session.
“Whether or not it will be voted into law, we don’t know as of now, but from Sarawak side, we know SUPP is opposed to it and PRS also has indicated its strong opposition to it.
“But we don’t know the overall Malaysian reaction, because this law does not need a two-third majority to be approved. It needs only a simple majority to be passed. This Bill when passed will signal a new dynamic in Malaysian politics, a new phase will feature in the country,” said PBDSB’s deputy president Patrick Anek Uren at a press conference here yesterday.
Also present were PBDSB president Cobbold John, PBDSB Acting Youth chief Rapelson Richard and PBDSB Supreme Council Member Wilfred Kutu Linau.
Anek also said, “For us in PBDSB we don’t understand the motivation behind the new law. I think many like-minded fair thinking people don’t understand why the need to enhance the punishment to Muslim offenders as the existing laws in the country are more than adequate to charter for both Muslims or non Muslims.”
The party also views the proposed RUU355 as potentially a very bad law because when passed in Parliament and becomes law, it will signal this nation is entering into a new and dangerous phase.
“We oppose RUU355 in its present shape and form before Parliament notwithstanding whatever argument put in favour of its promoters. And we will join the rank of the majority who stand opposed to it, and further will oppose all those who support it to becoming law in the coming GE14.”
