KUCHING: Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) supports the proposal to increase the number of parliamentary seats in line with the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
Its president Datuk Larry Sng said any increase in parliamentary constituencies should take into consideration adjustments to the current imbalance of urban rural constituencies.
“Simply put, Chinese urban voters are underrepresented in Sarawak. I hope there will be a re-delineation exercise (to increase parliamentary constituencies in Sarawak) to address this issue,” he said when contacted today.
Sng, who is also the Julau Member of Parliament (MP), said having more seats for Sarawak means having more say or louder voice in the federal government.
On Sunday, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari said Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) will form a committee to study the proposed number of additional seats before applying to the Election Commission (EC).
“We will have a committee by PBB for us to apply to the EC for the consideration to establish new parliamentary constituencies because the decision is up to them,” he told a press conference after officiating at the PBB Betong Zone Special Convention.
He also said the proposal to increase the parliamentary seats was in line with the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
Abang Johari was commenting on one of the resolutions passed at the convention which called for the number of parliamentary seats in Sarawak to be increased by at least 12 and for three of the new seats to be under Betong Zone.
