PBPHS to hold Sarawak Int’l meet in August

KUCHING:  Former Sarawak Hockey Association (PBPHS) players will host the International Invitational 9-a-side Hockey Tournament Sarawak 2017.

The president of PBPHS, Ir Haidel Heli said the inaugural event was scheduled to be played at the Sarawak Hockey Stadium, Jalan Padungan, here, from August 5 to 6.

“History will be created when we will organise the international level tournaments,” said Ir Haidel during a press conference at the breaking of fast organised by the Confederation of Consulting Engineers Bumiputera Sarawak (GJPBS) at one of the city’s leading restaurant on June 15.

The breaking of fast programme was a token of appreciation to the staff of the Lebuhraya Borneo Utara Sdn. Bhd., Public Works Department (PWD), Sarawak Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Chamber (DUBS) and Sarawak Energy Bhd.

According to Ir Haidel, the tournament will be held in collaboration with the Former Hockey Player Club Kuching, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Mejar Jeneral Dato Ibrahim and Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS).

“This competition is expected to involve teams from various countries such as Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia and other star clubs from Peninsular and the host (Sarawak),” said Ir Haidel.

As he also said they also sent an invitation to China and Hong Kong and believe these countries will participate in the championship.

“A little disappointing when the representative of Australia was unable to participate because their league is still going on,” said Ir Haidel adding that Riverside Majestic Hotel was chosen as the official accommodation of the teams involved.

The championship, would have open category (men / mixed) and veteran mixed (40 years and over).

Ir Haidel said PBPHS hold the tournament in response to the state government’s aim to promote tourism through sport in Sarawak.
