KUCHING: The Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Youth is concentrating on the party’s traditional seats, namely Marudi, Meluan, and Tasik Biru, as well as two or three other seats which the party can win for Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) in the upcoming state election.
A senior Youth member, Robert Ayu said one of the seats which the party is preparing for is Ba’Kelalan.
“I am given the task to assist PDP’s potential candidate there. We have been moving on the ground introducing our potential candidate since July last year until recently when the new movement control order (MCO) was enforced.
“We have a good feeling that the voters are now back with us. The main opposition has split into two and there will be at least a four-cornered fight between Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB), Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK), and GPS,” he said today (June 24).
He added that not only will the upcoming state election be a crowded affair in terms of the number of candidates and parties, it would also be different from previous elections in that there would be less or no open campaigning.
He explained that if the number of positive Covid-19 cases did not decrease, there would be strict standard operating procedures (SOPs) imposed on the campaigning process.
“With this in mind, as far as PDP Youth is concerned, we are prepared,” he said.
Robert said due to the movement restrictions, PDP Youth had been trained to utilise social media platforms such as Facebook, Whatsapp, Telegram, and so on in their campaigning strategies.
However, he pointed out that in rural areas where most folks did not use social media, a personal touch was the only way.
“For this election, I strongly believe that GPS will win handsomely under the leadership of our Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
“His track record during his leadership of less than a term speaks for itself. Sarawak needs his leadership to attain a developed and high-income status by 2030,” he said.
