KUCHING: The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) has deployed 500 officers of all ranks to monitor areas at risk of floods.
Confirming this, Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Aidi Ismail said they were currently working hand-in-hand with personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba).
“PDRM and Bomba have been deployed to monitor the water levels as a precautionary measure in the event of floods in various areas.
“Our personnel at district level have also commenced operations and are ready for any eventualities, especially in high-risk areas,” he told the media at the Sarawak Police Contingent headquarters here on Thursday (Jan 13).
He added that officers would conduct surveillance and operate 24 hours throughout the rainy season.
Earlier, the Malaysian Meteorological Department issued a statement saying that continuous heavy rain was expected in Sarawak until Jan 15.
“The affected districts include Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu and Mukah,” it said.
It added that the warning was issued in view of signs showing that rain or thunderstorms were expected to occur with total rainfall exceeding 60mm within six hours.
