MIRI: Some 20 people staged a peaceful protest outside the Miri old courthouse building at Jalan Kingsway thisday morning to protest against the Bill to amend Article 1(2) of the Federal Constitution tabled in Parliament on April 4.
The protesters were led by Fong Pau Teck of the Sarawak Independence Alliance (SIA).
They demonstrated for about 30 minutes before dispersing peacefully.
The group had arrived at the compound of the old courthouse at 9am and chanted “Kami Negara Sarawak” while holding and waving old Sarawak flags.
Fong, when met, said that the amendment Bill was downgrading Sarawak’s rights.
A team of Miri police was also seen arriving at the venue to monitor the situation.
Fortunately, no untoward incident happened during the 30-minute gathering.
About 10 minutes into the protest, Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting and Miri Mayor Adam Yii also arrived at the venue. However, they left 10 minutes later after greeting the protestors.
Both of them refused to comment on the gathering.
