MIRI: The Penan community in Long Leng Tutoh Apuh Baram expressed their gratitude as Sedidik’s pre-school was launched by the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg today (July 4).
Simultaneously, five Sedidik’s pre-schools were launched in five Penan settlements in Baram.
These settlements include Long Kawa, Long Jenalong, Long Leng, Long Kerangan, and Ba’Selulong.
Setiawan Maister, a 27-year-old, said that the opening of the Penan pre-schools will provide more opportunities for Penan children to access early education.
Previously, they had to travel long distances or go to nearby villages to attend school.
According to her, the launch of these pre-schools now allows the Penan community to easily access early childhood education in their own area.
Christie Nancy, a 21-year-old assistant teacher at one of the pre-schools, shared the same hope that more Penan children will attend school now.
Long Leng’s chief, Maister Lo Lee, who is 59 years old, thanked the state government for this initiative, which helps the Penan community gain access to early childhood education.
He also hoped for the government to develop tourist attractions in the area.
Long Leng has a beautiful waterfall called “Ba’Diah,” which is only a 20-minute walk away.
