KUCHING: Government pensioners are urged to continue to serve the community as they can act as reference to others.
Assistant Minister for Rural Economy (Coastal Areas) and Fisheries, Datuk Haji Julaihi Narawi said that although pensioners belonged to the elderly group, their experience and knowledge were valuable.
“Pensioners are like a ‘box’ full of knowledge and wisdom. Therefore, I believe their experience and knowledge can be used as reference,” he said when speaking at the 45th anniversary dinner of Sarawak Government Pensioners Association (PPKS) here, last Saturday.
Julaihi, who is also Assistant Minister for Industrial Development (Investment and Promotion), said the younger generation should have the humility to learn from retirees.
“In fact, we in the government are willing to listen to the opinions of the retirees in the effort to develop the country. So hopefully retirees do not hesitate to share their experiences with the younger generation,” he said.
Earlier, PPKS chairman Haji Johari Ismail said retirees should be committed to continue serving the people, especially the younger generation.
“In line with our motto that age is not a barrier, I strongly encourage members of PPKS to engage with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and involve in social and religious activities.
“However, do not neglect your health because when we are healthy, we can do a lot of things,” he said.
He added that retirees also needed to be involved in charity works with the local residents.
Johari also urged state government retirees to register as members of the association which now had about 3,000 registered members.
