KUCHING: Sarawakians should start living with Covid-19 like any other disease as the government has now begun to gradually accept it as endemic.
This was clear as the government, though cautiously, has allowed the economy to open, said Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) chairman, Datuk Peter Minos.
Minos said the government had put its heart and soul into fighting the virus through all of its frontliners.
However, as in fighting a war, it would inevitably result in certain collateral pains and damages, most of which were unavoidable, he said in a statement on Thursday (Sept 9).
“We must all face the reality of the situation since we did not seek this war in the first place.”
Minos suggested that it was best that everyone, not just the government alone, perceive the war against Covid-19 as a shared responsibility.
“Instead of picking and digging the administration’s efforts at every turn and then going negative, we must come forward with actions and positive measures to assist the government,” he said.
On the drastic surge of Covid-19 cases of late, reaching over 3,000 cases per day in Sarawak, which had garnered adverse comments from both private and public entities, Minos said: “The government has done everything possible to combat the virus, but Covid-19 is unstoppable and deadly”.
He said every nation which was battling Covid-19 was still at it now and it was unfair for the people to keep blaming the government and criticising it when the situation was somewhat dire.
On the country’s vaccination programme, Minos believed it should continue until the country reached a total of 100 percent of the population.
“The vaccination programme is the wisest thing to do and achieve at this point together with all the necessary standard operating procedures (SOPs) in place. As part of our new normalcy, these must go on for as long as needed.
“We must also start appreciating and be thankful for the government’s effort for us, other than harping on them negatively,” he added.
