KUCHING: Engkilili State Assemblyman, Johnical Rayong Ngipa has requested the government and authorities concerned to consider developing a pepper hub and wet paddy hub in his constituency.

Johnical made the call in his debate speech during the State Legislative Asembly (DUN) sitting at DUN, Petra Jaya here yesterday.

“This call is made with regard to the setting up of Bukit Sadok Agropolitan Project which includes the  Engkilili State Constituency,” he said.

Johnical suggested that the pepper hub be located at Ulu Skrang.

“The  fertile land in Ulu Skrang is suitable for planting pepper.

“Besides, there are adequate suitable trees to be used as pepper posts. Areas not suitable for pepper growing can be planted with oil palms, rubber and hill paddy.

“This area is already connected by Ulu Skrang Road which makes it possible for the local people to sell their products to  towns like Betong and Sarikei,” said Johnical.

He also pointed out that the low-lying Hilir Batang Ai and Hilir Skrang areas  were suitable for large-scale wet paddy farming.

“Feeder roads are being built in the areas   and compensation for fruit trees have also been paid.

“When these feeder roads are completed, it will be easy for the farmers to transport their agricultural products to Betong, Engkilili or Bandar Sri Aman,” he added.

Johnical.also suggested that a mini sport stadium be built at Engkilili Town to allow the local people to hold sports and games there.

“In addition, I like to see the present upgrading of Engkilili Town Waterfront be completed according to schedule,” he said.
