KUCHING: Perdana Petroleum Berhad is planning to increase the representation of Sarawakians in its workforce.
Managing Director, Jamalluddin Obeng said the company is aiming to further boost the current 45 percent of Sarawakian employees, including offshore crew members.
“With the establishment of our new branch office in Miri where we can be more
accessible, we intend to increase this percentage further.
“We also want to engage with more local subcontractors such as catering companies and shipyards that can undertake vessel maintenance to support our operations,” he said.
Jamalludin said to achieve this goal, the company plans to actively recruit and raise awareness about the employment opportunities in the upstream oil and gas sector.
He pointed out that there is still a lack of awareness among Sarawakians, particularly the youth, about job prospects in this sector.
“Unfortunately, there are some perceptions on how working offshore is very tough, but this is not the reality of things.
“With proper training and mindset, working offshore can be very rewarding plus accommodations, meals and proper facilities such as internet accessibilities are also provided on board.”
“As such, we want to create awareness among the youth on this and how they have the potential to have lucrative earnings perhaps two to three times more as compared to other sectors onshore,” he said.
Perdana Petroleum is one of the leading providers of offshore marine services for the upstream oil and gas industry.
The company owns and operates its fleet of 15 vessels to support an array of offshore activities including exploration, development, facilities installation, hook-up and commissioning, production, operation as well as maintenance.
For the nine-month period ended 30 September 2023 (9MFY2023), Perdana Petroleum generated a revenue of RM 215.19 million with a net profit of RM 23.15 million for the period.
