Perhebat prepares retiring military personnel for civilian life

KOTA SAMARAHAN: A total of 3,256 soon-to-be retired personnel from the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) have completed their Transitioning Training Programme under the Ex-Servicemen Affairs Corporation (Perhebat).

“This programme, unique to the military, is crucial for personnel preparing for retirement,” said Lt- Gen Datuk Mohd Sofi Md Lepi.

“The Transition Training Programme, managed by Perhebat, provides a structured pathway for retiring military personnel.

“It includes six categories of training, allowing participants to choose based on their preferences and service qualifications. The training period for officers is three months, while other ranks’ duration varies,” he said.

A total of 281 were awarded the Diploma Kemahiran Malaysia through the Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (R-PEL) programme, in collaboration with the Jabatan Pembangunan Kemahiran (JPK).

Mohd Sofi said this at the closing ceremony of the Diploma Kemahiran Malaysia and Penyampaian Sijil Perhebat 2024 ceremony at Kota Samarahan Civic Centre, here on Tuesday (June 11).

Since 2021, Perhebat has established 17 Veteran Training and Guidance Centers (PLBV) across Malaysia, enabling personnel to train in their home states without travelling to the main Perhebat Complex in Sungai Buloh.

This decentralisation has significantly increased participation, with 93.1 per cent of personnel choosing Perhebat for their transition training.

Perhebat , in collaboration with JPK, also offers the Recognition of Prior Learning (R-PEL) programme, providing structured certification based on service experience.

This initiative aims to enhance veterans’ employability and opportunities for higher education.

“Approximately 5,000 to 6,300 personnel retire annually, with 75 per cent aged between 33 and 42.

“I am optimistic that veterans within this age range, equipped with skills, expertise, strong identity, and high discipline, will be able to contribute to the growth of companies in this state,” he added.

In a related development he announced that Perhebat recently signed MoUs with eight agencies and institutions, including Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah, GiatMara, and others, to facilitate training and job placements.

Additional agreements with Affin Islamic Bank Bhd., Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd., and Bank Simpanan Nasional will provide training and business incentives to veterans.

Overall, Perhebat is tracking the career progress of 6,851 veterans who completed training in 2023, and has found that 60 per cent have secured second careers.
