KUCHING: The Malaysian Islamic Welfare Organisation (Perkim) Sarawak Branch is planning to construct a new building that will house a stroke rehabilitation centre, elderly care services, and serve as the branch’s headquarters.

Economy Deputy Minister, who is also Sarawak Perkim chairperson, Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib said that Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has responded positively and provided valuable insights on sustainable development for the project.

“We sought the Premier’s advice because we aim to implement this initiative with sustainability in mind, while also gathering feedback on how best to approach it,” she said.

She told reporters this after a courtesy visit to Abang Johari at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here, Tuesday (Oct 1).

Hanifah, who is also the Mukah MP, said that Abang Johari suggested incorporating green building elements, such as solar panels, into the construction.

She further elaborated on the elderly care services, stating that it will function as a day-care centre, providing a social space for senior citizens, while also offering learning opportunities.

“We want to create a space where the elderly feel valued and can socialise. It will also offer them the chance to learn new things, especially regarding healthcare and nutrition,” she added.

The new building is planned to be located along Jalan Sultan Tengah, Petra Jaya, near the Laila Taib Welfare Complex (Peryatim), with an estimated construction cost of under RM15 million.

Present at the meeting were Perkim Sarawak vice-chairpersons, Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim and Datin Noraini Hussin, honorary secretary Datin Mazlin Darus, honorary treasurer Dayang Noraini Abang Zawawi, along with other committee members and consultants.
