KANGAR: The Perlis government has abolished the Village Security and Development Committee (VSDC) and replaced it with the Village Community Management Council (VCMC), said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azlan Man.

He said the Rural Development Ministry (RDM) would appoint five new members to sit on the VCMC.

‘’Prior to this, every VSDC has 20 members but it was reduced to 13 people and boosted with five appointed by RDM to become 18 for all 388 villages in the state,’’ said Azlan.

He was talking to reporters after a Conference on Best Practice and the 18th annual general meeting of the Malaysia Association of Local Authorities (Mala) 2019 with the co-operation of the Kangar Municipal Council (MPK) as host here today.

Also present was Mala president and Penang City Council Mayor Datuk Yew Tuang Seang.

Azlan said he handed it to RDM whether to revamp or appoint new faces for the posts of chairman and secretary.

Prior to this, its minister, Datuk Seri Rina Mohd Harun said the Cabinet agreed to retain the existing chairmen and secretaries but it was up to the state governments to revamp, except the management procedure and policy, which were regulated by RDM.

In a programme on Friday, Azlan handed the appointment letters to 388 VCMC chairmen and secretaries.

He said the state government would wait for the names of five candidates that would be picked by RDM to be in VCMC.

Meanwhile, Yew said, to date, only 89 of the 155 local authorities (LA) nationwide joined Mala.

He hoped that more LA would join Mala because it is a platform for co-operation and sharing of ideas to strengthen LA. – Bernama
