KUCHING: Petanque is gaining popularity among civil servants in the state.

At the recent MAKSAK Sarawak Games 2022-Petanque, it attracted nearly 100 participants from various departments and agencies of the state and federal governments from all over Sarawak.

“This has proven that the sport of petanque is now increasingly popular among civil servants,” said State Secretary Datuk Seri Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki.

“Petanque is also a community sport that can strengthen the relationship between civil servants and the local community, it can even be one of the sports that can raise the name of Sarawak in competitions at the national level.

“I believe that the players who have been selected to represent the state at the national level in November 2022 in Negeri Sembilan will be able to train more diligently and increase their efforts to bring glory to the state,” he added.

He said this in his speech read by MAKSAK Sarawak honorary secretary Semawi Mohamad at the closing of the MAKSAK Sarawak Games 2022-Petanque, here on Yesterday (Aug 15).

The state government supports the organisation of sports events to encourage civil servants to exercise and be active in sports and competitions, he said.

The competitions and tournaments, he said, will also serve as platforms to discover new talents in sports among civil servants.

“This effort needs to be supported by various parties to prove that our athletes are capable and competitive, similar to those at the national or international level,” he added.
