KUCHING: The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) and the Sarawak government will form a coordination committee to ensure that programmes and projects can be planned and implemented effectively.
This is to ensure the well-being of the people of Sarawak and the country.
The matter was agreed upon during a meeting between PETRA led by the Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, and the Sarawak government led by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Wisma Bapa here today.
Also present in the meeting were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian; Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi; State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki; Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali; secretary-general of PETRA Datuk Mad Zaidi Mohd Karli, PETRA management and senior officials, as well as senior Sarawak government officials.
Earlier, Fadillah, who is also responsible for Sabah and Sarawak affairs, chaired the Coordination Meeting for the Kuching Flood Mitigation Project (RTB) at the Sarawak Irrigation Department.
He was briefed on the design of the Kuching RTB before the project is implemented to ensure that the project’s benefits are targeted to the community accurately and effectively.
Later, he proceeded to Wisma Persekutuan Kuching to receive a briefing on projects implemented by federal government implementing agencies in Sarawak.
In a press statement, Fadillah said, a total of 46 projects under the water sector in Sarawak have been approved through PETRA, comprising 33 connection projects and 13 new projects with a total cost of RM6.01 billion.
“The approved amount for implementation in 2024 is RM298 million,” he said.
The approved projects include flood and coastal flood protection, coastal erosion, estuary conservation, Integrated River Basin Management (IRBM) plan studies, sewage treatment plant development, pollution control facilities, sewerage system development and upgrading of water treatment plants.
Fadillah said the Federal Government is always concerned and committed to ensuring sustainability in the implementation of government projects to guarantee maximum impact for the people.
He added that comprehensive and continuous monitoring is key to achieving balanced national development, as envisioned by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim through the MADANI concept.
