KUCHING: Petronas has awarded education sponsorships to 119 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2022 high achievers from Sarawak this year under its Powering Knowledge programme, up from 108 last year.
This represents 19.8 per cent of the total 600 sponsorships awarded to recipients throughout Malaysia this year.
According to a media release, Petronas is spending RM340 million for this programme, which enables SPM high achievers to pursue their tertiary education in various academic fields including chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, petroleum engineering, geophysics, accounting, marketing, law, data science, and data engineering at universities locally and abroad.
Most will be studying at Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) and the rest will be at leading universities in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan and South Korea.
The students received their sponsorship letters from Petronas Chairman Tan Sri Mohd Bakke Salleh during a presentation ceremony at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) on Oct 14.
Also present was Petronas Senior Vice President of Project Delivery and Technology, Datuk Bacho Pilong.
Petronas believes that investing in education and human capital development at all levels will enable a continuous and sustainable pipeline of talent, said Moha Bakke.
“Petronas Powering Knowledge is our commitment to champion the pursuit of knowledge among students and educators.
“We support their quest for quality education and are devoted to empowering them to strive for progress and impact a rapidly changing world.”
Petronas, under its Powering Knowledge programme, has contributed RM556 million towards education programmes in Sarawak since 1992. This investment includes the RM101 million Mara Junior Science College (MJSC) Bintulu, which will be opened soon.
