BINTULU: The Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sarawak Petchem Sdn Bhd to enhance Sarawak’s low-carbon economy.
In a joint statement, the two entities said this agreement focuses on the supply of natural gas to Sarawak Petchem’s upcoming Low-Carbon Ammonia and Urea Plant, set to be established here.
This signifies PETROS’ role as the sole Gas Aggregator for Sarawak, focusing on efforts to promote greater statewide gas utilisation while supporting Sarawak’s aspiration to accelerate its development in petrochemical industry and growing its low-carbon economy.
“Under the MoU, PETROS plans to supply 160 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) of natural gas to the Low-Carbon Ammonia and Urea Plant in Bintulu upon the targeted completion and commissioning of the plant by 2030.
“Currently, the plant is undergoing a feasibility study and is expected to meet the rising demands for low-carbon energy solutions and fertilisers when it comes onstream,” the statement said.
The signing ceremony took place during the launch of the Sarawak Methanol Complex in Bintulu, coinciding with Sarawak Day celebrations today (July 22).
The event was attended by prominent figures, including the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, PETROS Corporate Strategy Senior Vice President Abang Arabi Abang Narudin, Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain, senior management team from both organisations and industry stakeholders.
Representing PETROS, group chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Janin Girie emphasised the significance of this partnership, saying “This signing showcases our initiatives as the Gas Aggregator for Sarawak, enabling the development of high-value downstream industries that leverage low-carbon energy solutions. It aligns with the state’s green energy agenda aimed at reducing carbon emissions for a sustainable energy future.
“Through this partnership with Sarawak Petchem, we also aspire to promote more high-value downstream activities and increase domestic gas usage to boost Sarawak’s economic growth.”
On the same note, Sarawak Petchem’s managing director and CEO Datuk Mohammad Ibrahim highlighted the importance of the natural gas supply for the company’s diversification strategy and future expansion into low-carbon markets.
“This agreement ensures a reliable supply of natural gas to the Sarawak Methanol Complex, supporting our growth and sustainability objectives,” he said.
The statement added that the MoU reflects a shared commitment between the two Sarawak-owned companies to uphold high standards of environmental stewardship and innovation.
