KUCHING: Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) is empowering future talent through initiatives like the Petros Youth Ambassador and STEM programmes for secondary students.

Petros chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Hamid Bugo said these programmes aim to introduce students to skills to shape Sarawak’s future by highlighting the importance of STEM in solving real-world challenges.

“I would like to acknowledge the academic institutions that have recently partnered with us, including University of Technology Sarawak (UTS), Curtin University Malaysia, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas).

“Through our Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with these academic institutions, we can address the evolving energy landscape while advancing energy transition and education in Sarawak, focusing on technological innovation and creating opportunities for students through internships, scholarships and graduate programmes,” he said.

He said this during the Petros Connect 2024 at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here on Tuesday (Oct 29).

Hamid added that Petros is collaborating with secondary schools such as MRSM Betong and Kolej Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang in Miri and vocational institutions like the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (Centexs), Pusat Pembangunan Kemahiran Sarawak (PPKS), and Institut Kemahiran Mara (IKM), along with training providers like Fastart and energy solution companies like Malakoff, ensuring that youth are equipped with the necessary skills and agility to adapt to a dynamic working environment.

Other sessions also discussed strategies on enhancing local participation for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) throughout Sarawak’s expanding oil and gas value chain.

As part of Petros’ social investment efforts in educating and nurturing Sarawak’s young talents, the inaugural event also included a series of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) workshops and competitions to encourage students’ interest in STEM fields while developing their creativity and technical skills.

The event showcased four business areas: Upstream, Downstream, Sarawak Resource Management (SRM), and Capital Projects, each featuring dedicated booths open to the public for learning and
engagement.

Visitors also explored various additional booths, including the People (HR) and Industrial Capability booths, a DJ corner by Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), Jiran Sekampung, and a Supply Chain booth specifically designed for vendors.
