KUCHING: Miri has been identified as one of the four upcoming gas hubs to provide state-wide access to affordable, reliable gas supply and clean energy under the Sarawak Gas Roadmap (SGR).
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the roadmap is a key pillar in realising Sarawak’s 2030 vision of becoming a high-income and advanced state through the prioritisation of 1,200 million standard square feet per day (mmscfd) of the state’s natural gas to spur the domestic economy.
He said the other three identified hubs were Bintulu, Samalaju, and Kuching.
“Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) will be investing RM2 billion to develop the upcoming 400MW Miri Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power plant, which will then power the city with affordable, reliable, and cleaner natural gas,” he said.
Abang Johari, represented by his deputy Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, was speaking at the official launch of piped gas supply at Medan Saberkas Miri today.
PETROS, he said, was incorporated in 2017 to become a flagship of Sarawak’s meaningful participation in the exploitation of the oil and gas resources that the state is endowed with, while at the same time safeguarding the interests of Sarawak and its resources.
“Oil was first discovered in Miri in 1910, and therefore this is a strategic location for Sarawak and PETROS as the state’s oil and gas company,” he said.
“Since 2017, PETROS has increased its equity production to more than 40 per cent offshore Miri, and for onshore Miri, drilling is expected to commence by the second half of 2023,” he added.
