KUCHING: Sarawak is dedicated to establishing four carbon storage sites by 2030, with PETROS appointed as the Resource Manager for Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) initiatives, announced Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He emphasized that this move would propel CCUS innovation to decarbonize key industries and contribute to net-zero goals, positioning Sarawak as a hub for CCUS in the Asia-Pacific region.

“In February of this year, PETROS inked a storage site agreement with PETRONAS through its subsidiary CCS Ventures and the Japanese Consortium Parties for the M3 depleted field offshore Sarawak.

“This collaboration marks a significant step in reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the Asia-Pacific region, encompassing Malaysia and Japan.

“In July 2024, we initiated the Sarawak Bid Round, presenting three carbon storage sites with an estimated storage capacity of around 1,000 million tonnes (MT) of CO2. This endeavour cements Sarawak’s leadership in CCUS efforts, creating new opportunities for international partnerships,” he shared.

He made these statements during the Sarawak Gas Roadmap Summit at the Sheraton Hotel today (Nov 25).

Abang Johari underscored that these initiatives align with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) introduced last year.

The roadmap, he elaborated, identifies CCUS as one of six key drivers of the energy transition, expected to generate over 200,000 jobs and produce approximately RM250 billion in gross value over the next three decades.

“Complementing our CCUS ambitions is Sarawak’s dedication to renewable energy. With substantial hydropower capacity, Sarawak leads the region in clean energy production and aims to achieve a 15-gigawatt (GW) capacity by 2035.

“This expansion positions Sarawak as a regional green energy powerhouse, enabling the export of sustainable electricity to our neighbouring countries, including Singapore, Indonesia, and beyond,” he concluded.
