KUCHING: Science has just become even more interactive with the launch of Petronas’ fourth Petrosains PlaySmart satellite centre here.
The mini science centre located on the ground floor of Kuching Civic Centre, is aimed at contributing towards a rich and stimulating environment to enhance science literacy in Sarawak.
Petrosains PlaySmart Kuching is one of the largest in the country, covering a floor area of 8,410 square feet and housing more than 50 interactive exhibits and several learning areas to facilitate learning and promote the centre as a community hub.
Visitors will also be treated to live science shows and demonstrations for a thoroughly immersive learning experience.
Petrosains PlaySmart Kuching was officially launched yesterday by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah who was representing Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
The mission of Petrosains PlaySmart is to bridge the gap between Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and the community, improving STEM literacy and inspiring people through engaging and imaginative learning experiences.
Speaking at the launch, Petronas chairman Datuk Ahmad Nizam Salleh provided some background on Petrosains and Petrosains PlaySmart.
“Petrosains was established in 1999 to provide facilities and exposure to children and youths towards interactive learning and exploration of science and technology with the aim of attracting the interest of the younger generation in this field,” he said.
He added that since then, Petrosains has executed various science and technology programmes such as outreach activities and mobile exhibitions all over the nation including here in Sarawak.
“In this regard, Petrosains PlaySmart was created as a satellite science centre to provide the same opportunities as the main science centre in Suria KLCC, Kuala Lumpur,” he revealed.
Ahmad added that thus far, four Petrosains PlaySmart centres have been established, namely in Kuantan, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu, and the most recent one in Kuching.
“This year, Petronas has also launched Yayasan Petronas with its mission to contribute towards community wellbeing through three main thrusts — education, community wellbeing and development, and the environment,” he said.
The operating hours for Petrosains PlaySmart Kuching are from 9am to 5pm from Tuesdays to Sundays. It is closed every Monday and during major public holidays. Admission to the centre is free.
