MIRI: The Phase 4 expansion project of Miri Public Park is set to commence, with completion expected within 12 months.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin stated that the project’s progress had been delayed due to two unsuccessful tender attempts.

“The project, which involves the rock cliff area and Forest Park, will be carried out at a total cost of RM1.5 million, funded by the Sarawak government through a special allocation approved in 2022,” Lee said during a site visit to the site on Thursday (Oct 10).

“The main objective of this project is to highlight the unique geological landscape of Miri Public Park, including the cliff formations, and to improve public amenities in the park,” he added.

The Geological Park will cover an area of 11.03 acres, preserving unique geological features while providing recreational space.

“This project, developed by Miri City Council (MCC), includes the construction of a main entrance road, rest stops, public toilets, a pavilion, two jogging tracks, and a geological pathway,” he said.

During the visit, Lee expressed disappointment over the omission of a viewing tower, originally part of the project plan.

He stressed the importance of the tower, which would offer panoramic views of Miri City and enhance the park’s appeal to tourists.

“The viewing tower should indeed be a priority, as it allows visitors to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Miri City and its surroundings. It could also become an iconic landmark for the geological park,” Lee stated.

He urged the council to explore solutions for including the tower in future phases of the project.

Upon completion, the project is expected to become a new tourist attraction and boost Miri City’s tourism sector.
