SIBU: The Photographic Society of Sibu (PSS) launched its Sarawak Riverine Photography contest here on Wednesday (Nov 8).
This competition features five categories: Culture, Adventure, Nature, Food, and Festival, each offering cash prizes for the winners. The first prize in each category is RM3,000, followed by RM2,000 for the second prize and RM1,000 for the third prize. There are also 10 consolation prizes, each worth RM200.
“The competition is open to all Malaysians and is free of charge. Participants are required to submit photos taken exclusively in Sarawak. The photo submission has started until Dec 8.
“To participate, scan the QR code or visit https://pss1952.org,” PSS president Peter Lee Pui Weng told the media. Also present was Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek.
He added that the contest is a significant event aimed at fostering community engagement and boosting the tourism industry in Sarawak.
He explained that the contest encourages participants to document the rivers and their inhabitants.
“It showcases not only the breathtaking landscapes but also the cultural richness, adventures, natural wonders, diverse cuisines, and vibrant festivals of Sarawak, all of which are fundamental in attracting tourists and contributing to the local economy.”
The Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak is collaborating with PSS to promote and support the contest. Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Hamzah Rahman has provided unwavering support through the Heritage, Arts, and Culture Facilitation Fund.
“His (Abdul Karim) vision and commitment have made this event possible and will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the preservation of Sarawak’s culture, the promotion of adventure and nature tourism, and the culinary and festival experiences that define the uniqueness of this remarkable region,” Lee pointed out.
He noted that this year, the ministry has allocated a facilitation fund of RM5.25mil to support various local associations in their efforts to organise activities aimed at promoting and enhancing Sarawak heritage tourism.
“We believe the photography contest will encourage wider participation from photographers, promote the region and support the creative industry within Sarawak by highlighting the talents of local photographers.”
