KUCHING: People of all races and religions came together to participate in the annual breaking of fast event organised by the Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) at Padang Merdeka here Saturday (March 23).
If anything, the mammoth get-together proved the enthusiasm for Sungkey picnic-style was alive and well despite inclement weather conditions in the city.
Even those from Kota Samarahan, Demak, Bako came for the event, demonstrating the sense of unity and togetherness in the community.
New Sarawak Tribune managed to catch up with some of the city folk who participated in the programme and here’s what they had to say.

In all honesty, we were unaware of the event unfolding at Padang Merdeka. However, we simply came because we noticed a large gathering and wanted to be a part of it. The rain did not bother us. It was a very peaceful event.

My cousins posted about the event on Facebook so we decided to come here and break fast together since we rarely have the opportunity to meet up during the holidays. This sungkey event is a truly wonderful moment for me and my cousins to spend time together and have a family reunion.

I saw that a lot of my friends posted about the event on Facebook so we thought of meeting up and celebrating one of our friend’s birthday here as well. I live in Mile 9 and my friends are living in the northern part of Kuching so it is really difficult to meet up sometimes so we took the opportunity to meet up here since it was a big event where we could break fast together.
