KUCHING: SG Education Group will organise a pilot project in Dalat, offering short-term programmes and scholarships to 425 unemployed youths, single mothers and former athletes from the area.
The unemployed youths comprise Higher Learning Institutions (IPT) graduates and Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) school leavers.
Minister of Welfare, Women and Community Wellbeing Datuk Hajah Fatimah Abdullah said the programmes, which also included former athletes, was a new initiative undertaken in the state.
“This is something new; something that had never been done before and the opportunity is also given to former athletes. When they are unable to further their studies to a higher level, it will be difficult for them, especially if they don’t have the skills, to generate income,” she said during a courtesy call by the SG Education Group at her office at Baitul Makmur in Petra Jaya, yesterday.
Fatimah said the group had been invited to join the Education and Career Fair in Dalat on 16 March to share the relevant information.
“The SPM leavers and unemployed graduates are invited to come to the fair where the various higher learning institutions and colleges will set up their booths to provide information on programmes offered. This will present an opportunity for them to match their qualification and interest with the institutions.
“SG Academy is also offering the match with industry and at the end of the day, there will be employment,” Fatimah pointed out.
Meanwhile, the founder and chairman of SG Education Group, Dato’ Sri Ganes, said their programme was to produce big fast results for their focus groups.
“We would like to identify a group of women who need skills training in culinary, pastry and others to generate more income for themselves. It is a competitive training and our training is for short-term solution,
“We would also like to provide scholarship to this group, especially single mother, to generate their own income, with the skills training. Our ambassador, Watson Nyambek, a former athlete, will identify athletes in Sarawak, especially in Dalat, who have potential so that they will receive skills training to generate their own income.
“Even Watson Nyambek himself took his own measure to hold clinics and training for youths. Therefore, we would like to use the model to identify potential former athletes and youths in Dalat for skills training so that they will be able to give an impact to the area,” said Ganes.
