KUCHING: A pilot project on the use of solar powered light-emitting diode (LED) street lights is being carried out in two villages in Sarawak and two in Perak.

Rural Development Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Latiff Ahmad said in Sarawak, the pilot project was being held in Kampung Long Semado and Kampung Long Sukang in Lawas.

“The other two villages are Kampung Sungai Tiang and Kampung Sungai Kejar in Perak,” he said.

Dr Abdul Latiff was replying to Sabak Bernam MP Datuk Mohd Fasciae Mohd Fakeh who had asked about the use of solar powered street lights for rural roads during the question-and-answer session in Parliament on Monday (Nov 16).

“Indeed, the system of using solar street lights is cost saving. As such, the ministry has decided to carry out this pilot project.

“It is hoped this new concept can be expanded throughout the country as it is cost saving,” he said.

Dr Abdul Latiff added a new policy was needed in view of this and the ministry had started formulating the policy.

“This is because the process of implementation must be transparent and the procurement must be transparent. “There must be an open tender so that the villagers are able to enjoy low electric tariffs,” said the minister.
