KUCHING: Women facing the challenges of breast cancer are receiving much-needed support, thanks to the efforts of the Pink Ribbon Support Group.

Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Law, MA63, State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali said the group provides not only essential health information but also a support network that fosters camaraderie and resilience among survivors.

“This is one of many activities we (Pink Ribbon Support Group) organise to strengthen social bonds among breast cancer survivors.

“It allows survivors to support each other while also raising awareness about breast cancer,” she said during the 2024 Pink Ribbon Breakfast programme held in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month at Merdeka Palace here today (Oct 26).

Hasidah, who is Pink Ribbon Support Group development advisor, added that the group will continue to collaborate with NGOs and other agencies such as National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) and Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) to expand cancer awareness programmes targeting women.

“My advice is to foster collaboration with all NGOs and relevant agencies. We can never work in silo.

“Working together uplifts the spirits and addresses the needs of breast cancer survivors,” she added.

Meanwhile, Pink Ribbon Support Group president Suriani Rapaiee added that mental health challenges often accompany a breast cancer diagnosis, and that the group serves as an important platform to reassure women that they are not alone in their journey.

“Chemotherapy and treatment are difficult, and many patients also experience mental health challenges, such as anxiety and depression.

“Therefore, this group offers a place where women can connect with others who understand what they’re going through, reminding them that they don’t have to face it alone,” she added.

Suriani also encouraged anyone in need of support to reach out directly to the group for guidance and companionship during their journey.
