KUCHING: Polytechnic Kuching Sarawak (PKS) plays a key role in developing the technical sector.
Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Roland Sagah said it has the potential to be a catalyst for technical human capital and contribute to the industrial workforce.
As such, he hoped PKS will remain the main choice in Sarawak’s TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) education by always offering courses relevant to the needs of the local job market.
“The Sarawak government sincerely hopes that PKS will continue to play a major role in a more dynamic and proactive manner in the development of higher education in Sarawak.
“In order to ensure that PKS will continue to grow and be able to compete with other TVET educational institutions, the institution needs to chart appropriate measures that can attract students and industry players to continue their studies and collaborate with PKS.
“I am sure, with this measure, PKS will be able to stand out with their own character as a centre of excellence for knowledge,” he said.
He said this at the 30th PKS convocation ceremony at the Imperial Hotel here on Monday (Sept 12). His speech was delivered by the Education Advisor at the Sarawak Premier’s Office Datuk Amar Micheal Manyin Jawong.
With current development and changes, he said PKS still has a lot of room to grow.
“We have seen that in more than 20 years, PKS has successfully proved that the institution can adapt to the development of Sarawak.
“This aspect indirectly gives the impression that PKS is able to meet the needs of students to prepare themselves for the job market and also the challenges of the future,” he said.
On the same note, PKS Director Hikmatullah Hajid Ahmad Khan said the employability rate of PKS graduates is now over 96 per cent.
“With that rate, it is clear that PKS graduates are always in demand in today’s job market.
“To maintain that rate, PKS always ensures that all students are also equipped with soft skills which are also criteria sought by employers,” said Hikmatullah.
