MIRI: A branch of the Fudan Institute of Traditional Medicine will be set up here.
The move was announced by Prof Dr Dong Jingcheng, president of the Fudan Institute of Integrative Medicine at Huashan Hospital in China, on Tuesday.
“We will do it step by step,” he stated, responding to a question about future collaborations between Fudan Institute and Miri.
Prof Dr Dong and his entourage were warmly welcomed by Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting, and Mayor Adam Yii upon their arrival at the Miri Visitor Information Centre.
He will be one of the keynote speakers at the Kenyalang Smart City Summit (KSC) on Wednesday here.
The summit will be graced by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian, representing Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
“Miri has a glorious future, and we are very eager to cooperate with Miri,” Prof Dr Dong said.
“We will do this step by step, starting with establishing an integrated modern and traditional Fudan Institute here.”
Prof Dr Dong and his team later visited the new block of Miri Hospital, where they were greeted by Minister of Transport Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin and Miri Hospital director Dr Jack Wong.
“Hope this will not be the first and only visit by Prof Dr Dong. We look forward to his help in advancing integrative medicine, combining traditional and modern approaches,” said Lee.
“This is the future of medical science, and we in Sarawak are very interested in this progress,” he added.
Lee also highlighted Sarawak’s potential in the medical field, emphasizing the region’s rich biodiversity and the opportunities it presents for integrative medicine.
“With our untapped resources, we can develop treatments and cures for diseases,” he said.
“I personally hope that Prof Dr Dong and his team will establish a presence here to explore Sarawak’s natural herbs and translate them into modern medicine to improve health outcomes.
“The establishment of a branch institute in Miri is seen as a promising development for both medical advancement and international cooperation, potentially transforming Miri into a hub for integrative medicine in the region, Lee disclosed.
