BINTULU: A single entity will be developed in the next two years to enable a more effective administration of treated clean water in Sarawak.

Utilities and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Julaihi Narawi said so far there are four agencies involved in the supply of clean water in the state, including the Kuching Water Board.

The others are Laku Management Sdn Bhd, the Sibu Water Board and the Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB).

He said the establishment of the entity will bring about a more systematic, comprehensive and high quality water supply agency.

“This will allow the people to enjoy good and quality clean water supply in the future,” he said during the closing of the Sarawak Water Supply Sports organised by Laku Management Sdn Bhd here on Sunday night (Oct 30).

He noted that the government’s plan to merge the four agencies is still in the planning stages and would be implemented once the framework for the merger master plan has been approved.

He believes that the time has come for Sarawak’s clean water supply management system to be handled by a significant body or agency.

This, he added, is to ensure that good and more efficient services can be delivered to the people.

Commenting on telecommunications coverage, Julaihi said the Sarawak government is now actively taking various measures to improve telecommunications coverage services and electricity supply to all citizens.

The move, he said, is in line with the government’s efforts to develop a better digital economy sector including internet coverage in rural areas.

His Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Resident of Bintulu Division Datuk Jack Aman Luat and acting Permanent Secretary of the Utilities and Telecommunications Ministry Syed Mohamad Fauzi Shahab were among those present.
